The summer movie season has officially kicked off. That means the next three months will be packed with superheroes, space travel and zombies. “Star Trek: Into Darkness” and “Fast & Furious 6” have us off to a good start, but we’ve rounded up the top five action flicks we’re excited for this summer. Watch the trailers to take a look for yourself.
After Earth (May 31)
Will Smith returns to sci-fi with his real-life son, Jaden, in M. Night Shyamalan’s futuristic epic about a deserted—and dangerous—planet Earth. Their spaceship crashes on the planet, leaving them stranded among deadly creatures adapted to kill humans. Smith is the blockbuster king and it looks like his son is being groomed to take over the thrown.
Man of Steel (June 14)
Superman gets yet another reboot, this time by director Zack Snyder (“300”) and producer Christopher Nolan (“The Dark Knight”). Their involvement had us instantly interested but the newest trailer has us downright excited. Henry Cavil takes on the iconic lead role with a supporting cast that includes Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Russell Crowe, Laurence Fishburne and Kevin Costner.
World War Z (June 21)
Based on Max Brooks’ novel, this action/horror epic stars Brad Pitt as a United Nations employee searching the globe for a way to end a zombie apocalypse that threatens to obliterate humanity. Despite the movie’s reported rewrites and reshoots, the trailer looks thrilling, scary and entertaining. Directed by Marc Forster.
The Wolverine (July 26)
Hugh Jackman’s sixth outing as the Marvel hero is based on the limited comic-book series from 1982. Set seven years after “X-Men: The Last Stand”, Wolverine is now struggling with his seemingly waning regenerative abilities while fighting the Silver Samurai (Will Yun Lee) and Viper (Svetlana Khodchenkova). Famke Janssen reprises her role as Logan’s love interest, Jean Grey.
Elysium (August 9)
Written and directed by Neill Blomkamp (“District 9”), this sci-fi drama pits Matt Damon against Jodie Foster in a battle royale against the classes. Set in the year 2154, the affluent live in an advanced space station above Earth while the poor struggle to survive on the overpopulated and barren planet. Strict immigration laws keep the two from intersecting, until ex-con (Damon) tries to seek medical refuge in space.
